Give your Christmas Tree a Second Life

If you have a real Christmas tree, choose from options that keep your tree out of the landfill and benefit wildlife and the planet:

  • Real trees and wreaths are collected weekly by DSNY on your recycling & compost day.

  • If you have space in your yard, consider using your tree as a brush pile for the birds.  Not only will the pile provide extra shelter for feathered friends during the cold winter months, but it’ll also give you some excellent backyard bird-watching opportunities!

  • Some farms accept Christmas trees for their goats to munch on the vitamin C rich needles.  Be sure to confirm that the farm near you is currently accepting Christmas trees.

  • View tips on making your own brush pile and more on how to give your real Christmas tree a second life.

FREE info session on Brooklyn South and Queens Northeast Commercial Waste Zones

The NYC Department of Sanitation’s (DSNY) Commercial Waste Zone program (CWZ) is transforming NYC’s commercial waste sector in accordance with Local Law 199 of 2019.  This fall the program is rolling out to the Bronx.

Under the Commercial Waste Zones system, anyone who currently has their waste collected by a private carter must enter a new written service agreement, or contract, with one of the carters authorized to collect from their zone.  The new contract must have a start date that is on or after your zone's implementation start date, which for Brooklyn South and Queens Northeast, is January 1, 2026.

Businesses in Brooklyn South and Queens Northeast can sign new contracts NOW through February 28, 2026.

Businesses should visit nyc.gov/cwz to confirm their zone and compare maximum carter rates, and are encouraged to negotiate rates directly with the carters available in their zone.

  • Brooklyn South: Brighton Beach, Coney Island, Ditmas Park, East Midwood, Flatbush, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend, Homecrest, Madison, Manhattan Beach, Manhattan Terrace, Midwood, Prospect Park South, Sea Gate, Sheepshead Bay, South Midwood, West Midwood

  • Queens Northeast: Auburndale, Bay Terrace, Bayside, Beechhurst, Briarwood, College Point, Douglaston, Downtown Flushing, Fresh Meadows, Hillcrest, Hollis Hills, Jamaica Estates, Kew Gardens Hills, Little Neck, Malba, Murray Hill, Oakland Gardens, Pomonok, Queensboro Hill, Utopia, Whitestone

Businesses that fail to sign a new contract during the sign-up period will automatically be assigned a carter by DSNY at the maximum rate allowable for the minimum number of collection pickups.

DSNY is hosting a series of free info sessions about Commercial Waste Zones and Local Law 199 of 2019. These sessions will cover key program details, including taking advantage of available recycling and organics collection discounts. Register for a session by clicking one of the links below or visit nyc.gov/cwz. DSNY will also send materials to your zone when the sign-up period officially begins.

About the New York City Department of Sanitation

The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City clean, safe, and healthy by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning streets, attacking the scourge of illegal dumping, and clearing snow and ice. The Department operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms, 705 salt spreaders, and several dozen bike lane operations machines. Under the Adams Administration, the Department is aggressively cleaning more parts of the City than ever before, including over 1,000 long-ignored areas spread across every neighborhood. With the highest wintertime uniformed headcount in 20 years, DSNY is more equipped than ever to remove snow and ice from the approximately 19,000 lane-miles of City streets.
